Do you hear what I hear?

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds.

Hebrews 1

Christmas Eve.

The world holds its breath, waiting and wondering. What miracle might the night bring?

My dad used to tell me that the animals were supposed to talk at midnight on Christmas Eve. He always looked at our dog with great disappointment when it failed to do so.

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear?

And yet, the night was no less miraculous.

Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear?

On that first Christmas God spoke a definitive word: I am with you. I love you.

It is the same word God speaks to you every day: I am with you. I love you.

A song, a song high above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea

This is love: the infinite enclosed in a finite body, God living and working among us, sharing our joys and struggles, experiencing everything we do, including death.

Said the king to the people everywhere
Listen to what I say!
Pray for peace, people, everywhere

You are never alone. In every moment of joy or despair, if you listen closely you can hear Jesus saying “I love you.”

Think about that for a moment and let it sink in; I mean, really let it sink in.

The Child, the Child sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light

The animals may not speak tonight, but God will speak tonight and every night. Listen carefully. Do you hear what I hear? It is good news.

May you have a blessed Christmas.

Christmas Eve Haiku

Straw

Tiny hands reaching
Velvet black sky angel-lit
God in the manger

Not a creature was stirring?

See the tiny mice
stuffing themselves on fried rice
gone in a thrice
